什么是Plagiarism?

根据Plagiarism.org,以下行为都算是抄袭:

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism by students is a serious problem in schools in the United States.  In minor cases, it can be quoting a sentence or two without quotation marks and citation to the source.  In the most serious cases, it can be copying a significant fraction of the entire work from someone else, using it as the plagiarist’s own work.  Plagiarism is also known as cheating or copying.

Plagiarism.org(insert hyperlink: http://www.plagiarism.org/) considers the following to be plagiarism:

  • To submit someone else’s work as your own,
  • To copy words or ideas from someone else without giving credit, and
  • Failure to put a quote or excerpt in quotation marks.

Why plagiarism is wrong?

Plagiarism is unethical, it is almost like “stealing”.  Plagiarists basically “steal” work from the original author, who put in time and hard work, and took the credit from the original author.

Studying in the States

Plagiarism is not allowed at schools in the United States.  This is because schools value honesty and academic integrity from their students.  The institutions strive to evaluate students based on the merits of their own work and ideas.  However, as the exact meaning of plagiarism differs not only from country to country, but also from school to school, it can be an unfamiliar concept to international students.

How to avoid plagiarism?

When you are writing a paper or working on an assignment that requires research, make sure to give credit or cite the original author or source from the information you used.  Plagiarism is easy to avoid if you follow the citation guidelines identified by your school or teacher, for example MLA, APA, or Chicago style.

If you are not certain about what are the rules for citations, one way to avoid plagiarism is not to copy from anyone at all, and be the original.  Ask the questions in the above picture to yourself to see if you plagiarized.  You may also submit your paper to any online Plagiarism Checker to help avoid plagiarism.

Schools in the United States have strict rules against plagiarism.  Teachers can often easily tell if a student is plagiarizing or not.  There are also different ways to check for plagiarisms.  Punishment for cheating or plagiarizing can range from receiving a failing grade to suspension from school.  It is important to remember that to maintain your F-1 student status, you must make normal academic progress and enroll in a full course of study.
